Multilateral relations

As part of their multilateral action, the Walloon Region and the Wallonia-Brussels Federation pay particular attention to the discussions and programmes of the multilateral organisations in Geneva, and the two governments have recently signed agreements with several of these organisations.

In 2022, the Minister-President of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation signed an agreement with the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to promote and protect human rights in the Democratic Republic of Congo, notably by strengthening the rule of law, equality and the fight against discrimination, and integrating human rights into sustainable development. In the same year, the Minister-President of the Walloon Region signed an agreement with the World Health Organization (WHO) to support programmes and activities aimed at strengthening the health systems of several African countries. In 2023, the Minister-President of the Walloon Region also signed a Framework Agreement with the International Labor Organization (ILO). This agreement aims to ensure Wallonia's support for the ILO in its work to promote social dialogue, tripartism, freedom of association and collective bargaining, and decent work.

The Wallonia-Brussels General Delegation in Geneva monitors the implementation of these agreements. It is also involved in discussions at these and other Geneva-based forums and organisations, such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Trade Organization (WTO), the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). It also liaises with specialised organisations such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

As a member of the Groupe des Ambassadeurs francophones (GAF - Group of French-speaking Ambassadors), the General Delegate is also involved in the work of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie with international organisations based in Geneva and Switzerland.
